Shouson Hill: A Hong Kong Fascination

While many people pass by Shouson Hill, not many know its unique history.

The name of this well-to-do enclave comes from Chow Shouson,  a Hong Kong businessman who was the city’s Senior Official during the Qing Dynasty right before the 1911 revolution.

He was an extraordinary man, having served as a Justice of the Peace in Hong Kong in 1907, he helped start the Bank of East Asia and was the first Chinese member of the Executive Council (and the list goes on…). In this spirit of excellence, Shouson Hill discovered its identity and name.

Boasting a high vantage point, along with a rich natural environment, Shouson Hill was an ideal spot for the British to bunker troops during World War II. In the present day, it is very well known for being home to the rich and famous, and is one of the most beautifully located environs in Hong Kong.

No wonder that together with Deep Water Bay, the area is often referred to as "richest neighbourhood on earth".

Of course, this all depends how you define richness. If it is something that stunningly overlooks both mountain and sea, you can check that box. But Shouson Hill offers so much more as well. It is family friendly – with eating and shopping in Stanley and Repulse Bay, and recreational hot spots such as the Hong Kong Golf Club, Aberdeen Marina Club, American Club and Hong Kong Country Club within easy reach.

For kids, schools nearby represent the cream of the crop in the city, with Hong Kong International School, South Island School, and Canadian International School all in striking distance. People who love outdoor activities just can't get enough of being close to Wong Nai Chung Gap, Violet Hill and the Twins, and plenty of swimming options including Deep Water Bay nearby.

Aside from all these advantages, there is an intriguing entrepreneurial vibe happening, with Wong Chuk Hang offering a selection of independent businesses, work spaces and cafes where you can sip a latte, and buy artisan foods for a special meal. In Shouson Hill, Crown Wine Cellars offers a world-renowned wine cellar and private members club as well.

So the question here really becomes: Who would not want to live in Shouson Hill? High rises are few and far between, with no commercial developments spoiling the view. It is a neighbourhood that would make Chow Shouson proud. Indeed, owing to the special nature of Shouson Hill, it still possesses unique houses that are unlike others in Hong Kong.
